North Shore is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP). It's located in Franklin County, Virginia, in the United States. You can find it along State Route 616. North Shore is also part of the larger Roanoke area. The community of Westlake Corner is right next to North Shore, to its north and northwest.

Exploring North Shore's Location

North Shore is in the northeastern part of Franklin County. It sits on a long piece of land, about 6 miles (10 km) long, that sticks out into Smith Mountain Lake. This lake was created by damming the Roanoke River.

The northeastern edge of North Shore follows the Roanoke River part of the lake. This also marks the border with Bedford County. The southern and southwestern edges follow the Blackwater River and Gills Creek.

The community of Westlake Corner is to the north of North Shore. Their border is made up of roads like Patience Lane and Scruggs Road. The small community of Scruggs is right in the middle of North Shore.

According to the United States Census Bureau, North Shore covers a total area of about 20.1 square miles (52.1 square kilometers). About 13.7 square miles (35.4 square kilometers) of this is land. The rest, about 6.4 square miles (16.7 square kilometers), is water.

In 2020, there were 3,332 people living in North Shore. There were also 2,954 homes. Most of the people, about 95%, were White. About 0.6% were African American or Black, and 0.2% were American Indian. A small number, 0.4%, were Asian. About 3.5% of the people were from two or more races. People who identified as Hispanic or Latino made up 1.4% of the population.

Back in 2010, North Shore had 3,094 residents. There were 2,950 homes at that time. The population was mostly White, about 97.3%. African Americans made up 1.3%, and Native Americans were 0.5%. About 0.4% of the people were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people were 1.0% of the population.

Parks and Public Access

Smith Mountain Lake Community Park is a public park in North Shore. Franklin County Parks and Recreation Department takes care of it. This 37-acre park opened in June 2007. It has walking trails, a fishing pier, a playground, and a community beach.

You can also get onto Smith Mountain Lake from Crazy Horse Marina. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources also has a public boating access site called Scruggs #8.
