When it first opened in 1924, the hospital was built on a very large piece of land, about 286 acres. By 2012, the land size had become smaller, about 105 acres. The hospital was first used to help patients with brain and mental health issues. Today, it offers many different kinds of medical care.

The district includes the main hospital buildings, homes for staff, and buildings for utilities and maintenance. Most of these buildings were built by 1947, and some even earlier, around 1922. This hospital is a great example of an early VA hospital for mental health. It was also the very first VA hospital in Massachusetts.
