Northborough is a small and friendly village in England. It is part of the Peterborough area in Cambridgeshire. This village is about eight miles north of the city of Peterborough. You can find a pub, a shop, a school, and even a small castle here! Northborough is also close to the border of Lincolnshire.

Discovering Northborough

Northborough is a quiet place with a population of about 1,318 people. It's a civil parish, which means it has its own local council. The village is located just one mile south of Deeping Gate. It sits right on the edge of Cambridgeshire, near the Lincolnshire border.

A Glimpse into History

The name "Northborough" is very old. It means 'northern fortified settlement'. This name was first written down way back in the year 656! It shows that Northborough has been an important place for a very long time.

Northborough Manor House

Northborough Manor House is a special old building. It looks like a small castle because it was built to be strong. Most of it was built in the early 1300s by a person named Roger de Norburgh. It's a great example of old English architecture.

St Andrew's Church

Close to the manor house is the village church, called St Andrew's. Parts of this church are even older than the manor house! The oldest sections were built in the late 1100s. After the king returned to power in England, Elizabeth Cromwell lived here. She was the wife of Oliver Cromwell, a very famous leader in English history. People say she is buried in this church. However, there is no tombstone or marker to show where she rests.

Northborough Today

Northborough has grown quite a bit over the years. The biggest change happened in the 1970s. Many new houses were built then, which made the village much larger. This also increased the number of people living in Northborough.

The Village School

Northborough has a small primary school for children. It's not just for kids from Northborough, but also for children from nearby villages like Maxey and Peakirk. The school used to be in an older building. But as the village grew, it moved to a new, bigger, and better-equipped site. The school now has a large field and an orchard, which is great for the students!
