History of the NEPAirshow
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Airshow first started in 1983. It was very popular and attracted many people every year until 2000. The airshow planned for 2001 was canceled. This happened because the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport was making big improvements. They were building a new terminal and fixing the runways.
After 2001, the airshow did not return for many years. One reason was that the show had lost money in its last year, 2000.
Bringing the Airshow Back
In 2013, Lackawanna County Commissioner Corey O'Brien suggested bringing the airshow back in 2014. However, this idea did not work out. Some people were worried because the airshow had not made a profit before.
Then, in late 2016, the Bi-County Airport Board decided to try again. This board helps manage the airport. They worked hard to bring the event back. The return of the airshow was officially announced in June 2017. Tens of thousands of people came to the 2017 airshow over two days. It was a huge success!
Even though the airshow was expected to happen again, it has not returned since 2017. This is partly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, a major jet team has not been available to perform.
