The northern Luzon giant cloud rat is a very large rodent. It is also called the northern Luzon slender-tailed cloud rat. In the Philippines, people sometimes call it bu-ot. This amazing animal lives only on the island of Luzon. It belongs to the Muridae family, which includes rats and mice.

What Does It Look Like?

This cloud rat is quite large. It can weigh between 1.9–2.6 kg (4.2–5.7 lb). From its nose to the tip of its tail, it measures about 75–77 cm (29.5–30.5 in) long. That's almost as long as your arm!

Its fur, called pelage, is long and covers its body and tail. The color can be very different from one rat to another. Most often, it's a light brown-grey or white. Some rats have dark brown or black spots.

Many northern Luzon giant cloud rats have a black "mask" around their eyes. They might also have a black "collar" around their neck. But some can be completely white!

There is another type of cloud rat called the southern Luzon giant cloud rat. It is usually smaller and all dark brown. Scientists are still studying how these two types of cloud rats are related.

Where Does It Live?

The northern Luzon giant cloud rat lives only in the northern and central parts of Luzon. This island is in the Philippines. You can find them in at least 12 different provinces.

These cloud rats like to live in forests and bushy areas. They can also be found in places where the habitat has changed, like plantations. They live from sea level up to about 2,200 metres (7,200 ft) high in the mountains.

In some areas, they share their home with the giant bushy-tailed cloud rat. However, the bushy-tailed cloud rat usually prefers higher, cooler places.

How Does It Behave?

The northern Luzon giant cloud rat is nocturnal. This means it is most active at night. During the day, it rests and sleeps.

These rats eat different kinds of plants. They are quite big, so they don't get caught in small traps. This makes them a bit harder for scientists to study.

Reproduction

Northern Luzon giant cloud rats often live in pairs. They usually have one or two young ones with them. They make their nests in hollow parts of trees. These can be standing trees or fallen logs. They also sometimes dig burrows in the ground to have their babies.

Conservation Status

Sometimes, northern Luzon giant cloud rats eat rice crops. Because of this, farmers might see them as a pest. People in the Sierra Madre region also hunt them for food.

In some places, hunting has caused these rats to disappear. This is called local extinction. But overall, the northern Luzon giant cloud rat is still common and found in many places. It seems to be able to handle the hunting pressure quite well.
