Distribution of M. tavaratra

The northern rufous mouse lemur (also known as the northern brown mouse lemur or Tavaratra mouse lemur) is a tiny, furry creature found only on the island of Madagascar. Its scientific name is Microcebus tavaratra. This little lemur lives in the northern parts of Madagascar, from the Ankarana Special Reserve in the west to the Manambato River in the northeast. It can also be found near the Irodo River in the north of the Analamerana Special Reserve.

Where Does the Northern Rufous Mouse Lemur Live?

This mouse lemur makes its home in the forests of northern Madagascar. Scientists are still exploring to find out exactly how far it spreads! For example, it might live even further north, up to the Montagne des Français.

We know it lives in several special protected areas. These include the Ankarana Special Reserve and the Analamerana Special Reserve. Both of these areas are looked after by Madagascar National Parks. It also lives in the Loky-Manambato protected area (near Daraina) and the Andavakoeira-Andrafiamena protected area. These last two are managed by an organization called Fanamby. These protected places help keep their homes safe.

What Does the Northern Rufous Mouse Lemur Look Like?

The northern rufous mouse lemur is quite small, usually about 12–14 cm (4.7–5.5 in) (about 5 inches) long. It has soft, thick fur with a mix of colors. Its back is usually a mix of earthy browns, like raw umber, clay, and yellow. Its belly is a lighter, whitish-beige color.

A darker stripe often runs down the middle of its back. Its head has reddish fur on the crown and ears, and a grayish-white area between its eyes. Around its eyes, you might see some darker markings. Its tail is also a mix of brown and cinnamon colors. Its tiny hands and feet have whitish-gray fur. This lemur also has dark, sensitive whiskers called vibrissae.

What Does This Mouse Lemur Eat and Do?

The northern rufous mouse lemur is an omnivorous animal. This means it eats both plants and other small creatures. It might munch on fruits, leaves, insects, or even tiny spiders.

This species is also nocturnal. This means it is most active at night, searching for food and moving around while most other animals are sleeping. During the day, it likely rests hidden away in tree hollows or dense foliage.

Why Is the Northern Rufous Mouse Lemur Important?

The northern rufous mouse lemur is an important part of Madagascar's unique ecosystem. It helps spread seeds from the fruits it eats, which helps new plants grow. It also helps control insect populations.

Unfortunately, this species is listed as "Vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This means its population is decreasing, and it faces a high risk of becoming endangered in the wild. The main threats to its survival are likely deforestation (when forests are cut down) and habitat fragmentation (when its home is broken into smaller pieces). Protecting the forests where it lives is very important for its future.
