Northlakes is located in the southeastern part of Caldwell County. It sits right next to Lake Hickory, which is a large lake formed by the Catawba River. This river also marks the border of Caldwell County. On the other side of the river are Burke and Catawba counties.

The city of Hickory is just across Lake Hickory from Northlakes. It also shares a border with Northlakes to the west. The town of Granite Falls is located to the northwest of Northlakes. Along the northern edge of the community, you'll find Gunpowder Creek. This creek is flooded to create an arm of Lake Hickory.
