History of Northville
Early Settlement and Growth
People first settled where Northville is now around 1786. However, some areas south of the village were settled earlier, around 1762. The village was built on high ground. It was located between the Sacandaga River and Hunters Creek.
In 1797, Main Street was planned and built. The first store opened there in 1800. More stores soon followed. But the village grew slowly at first. By 1807, only seven families lived on Main Street. The first brick building was built in 1819.
A post office opened in 1824. In 1827, it officially became known as "Northville." By 1835, Northville was an important money center for the region. Around 1850, it started to attract visitors. These visitors came for fishing, hunting, and tourism. A map from 1868 shows that the village mostly grew along Main Street. Some homes were also on Bridge and First Streets. Factories were on Mechanic Street. Other streets like Second, Third, and Fourth were planned but mostly empty.
Becoming a Village and the Lumber Boom
Northville officially became a village in 1873. It was part of the town of Northampton. At this time, the lumber industry was booming. This meant many jobs in milling, barrel-making, and leather tanning. Northville became a busy town. The nearby area of Sacandaga Park also grew.
Hotels and entertainment halls were built. A railroad, the Gloversville and Northville (G&N), was finished in 1875. This connected the village to other places. Three years later, Northville's population reached 1,000 people.
Tourism and Modern Changes
In the late 1800s, the Sacandaga Park resort grew. It was developed by the Fonda, Johnstown, and Gloversville (FJ&G) company. This resort helped Northville's economy a lot. Tourists called it the "Coney Island of the North." Many hotels were built. The FJ&G also built a new train station on River Street. Guests at the park would take day trips to Northville by train.
Businesses and industries continued to grow. By 1880, the village's population had almost doubled. A dam was built on Hunter's Creek to create a water supply. Water pipes were installed on the main streets. Public water became available in 1891. The village's first bank opened in 1895. Northville kept growing and doing well into the early 1900s. New streets were built, and the population increased.
The Great Sacandaga Lake
The Conklingville Dam was finished on March 27, 1929. This dam was built to control flooding on the Hudson River. The Sacandaga River flows into the Hudson. Building the dam created the Great Sacandaga Lake. The lake came right up to the edge of Northville. Other nearby places, like Sacandaga Park, were flooded. Northville became a peninsula, surrounded by the lake.
This change happened at a difficult time, right when the Great Depression began. The village found it hard to recover its economy. But new types of tourism helped. People also started to focus on the village's history.
The Northville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means its important buildings are protected.
