History of Northampton

Northampton was officially created in 1799. It was formed from a northern part of the town of Broadalbin. The name 'Northampton' comes from a special land agreement made in 1741.

A big change happened in 1930 when the Sacandaga Reservoir was built. This reservoir created the Great Sacandaga Lake. Some areas that used to be dry land or swamps became covered by the lake.

Northampton covers about 89.9 square kilometers (or 34.7 square miles). A large part of this area is water, about 35.3 square kilometers (13.6 square miles), which is almost 40% of the town.

The northern border of the town touches Hamilton County. To the east, Northampton shares a border with Saratoga County.

The northwestern part of the Great Sacandaga Lake is located in Northampton. The Sacandaga River flows into the lake near the village of Northville. When the Great Sacandaga Lake was formed, it created several islands. Because of the lake, the town is split into three different parts.

Northampton is also located within the beautiful Adirondack Park.
