The Ohio & Erie Canal ran through Norton from 1827 to 1913. Electric trolley lines were added in 1905. These trolleys connected Barberton to Wadsworth through Norton.

Becoming a City

In 1958, the Norton Township Development Committee was formed. Residents felt the township government needed to change. They wanted a more organized government for their growing community.

An idea to become a village was put to a vote. It did not pass the first time. But in 1961, it passed, and Norton became a village. Richard DuFore was Norton's first Village Mayor.
