Noyo is a small community in California, located in Mendocino County. It's about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Fort Bragg, right by the Noyo River. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government. Instead, the county government helps manage it. Noyo sits at an elevation of 108 feet (33 meters) above sea level.

Noyo got its name from the Noyo River. But the river's name actually came from a mistake! Early European settlers thought the river was named after a village of the Pomo people. This Pomo village, also called Noyo, was actually on a different creek nearby, called Pudding Creek. The Pomo people had named Pudding Creek after their village. The settlers then accidentally gave the name "Noyo" to the larger river to the south.

History of Noyo

Noyo has a long history, especially with its post offices. The first post office, called "Noyo River," was open for a short time from 1859 to 1860. Later, a post office simply named "Noyo" operated for many years, from 1872 to 1918.

Today, the city of Fort Bragg has grown quite a bit. Its city limits now reach very close to the edge of the bluffs near Noyo. Even so, the few houses and businesses located just outside Fort Bragg's official city limits, especially those near the Noyo River, are still known as "Noyo."

Pomo Bluffs Park

A beautiful area near the mouth of the Noyo River is now part of a public space called Pomo Bluffs City Park. This park opened on April 22, 2006. It includes the headlands on the south side of the river's mouth and the shore on the north side. It's a great place for people to enjoy the views and nature.

Noyo in Movies

Noyo has even been featured in movies!

  • The 1924 silent film drama The Signal Tower was set in Noyo. This movie was about the railroad and its workers.
  • The 1980 horror film Humanoids from the Deep also chose Noyo as its setting.
