History of Nueva Italia
Nueva Italia was started in 1904 by the government of Paraguay. The idea was to create a farming area for families who came from Italy. This new settlement was about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Asunción, the capital city.
Besides the Italian families, people from Germany and Ukraine also moved to Nueva Italia. The first person in charge of this new settlement, officially called Colonia Nueva Italia, was an Italian count named Enrico Statella.
After World War I, many Italians went back to Italy or moved to Asunción. Even though there were some tough times at first, the settlement kept going as a small farming community. Some Italian families, like the Mura, Musto, and Carolini families, stayed and became a part of the local Paraguayan community.
By the 1930s, the colony was doing well. It grew into an important farming town for the Greater Asunción area. In 1956, the area became an official "Distrito Nueva Italia" (New Italy District). Today, it has almost 20,000 people.
The main jobs in Nueva Italia are farming and raising animals. Recently, more tourists have started visiting because of new roads that connect the town to the capital and other nearby places. The town itself has a perfect square shape. This is because of the original town plan made by Count Enrico Statella.
