Luque is a very important city in Paraguay. It is part of the Gran Asunción area, which is like a big city zone. People think Luque was founded either in 1635 or 1750.
In 1868, during the Paraguayan War, Luque was even the capital of Paraguay for a short time! It's located at 25°16′12″S 57°29′14″W / 25.27000°S 57.48722°W. Luque is home to Paraguay's main international airport, Silvio Pettirossi International Airport. It also has the Ñu Guasú Park, where the Paraguayan Olympic Committee is located.
The main office for South American football, CONMEBOL, is in Luque. It's close to the airport and has a cool museum about football. Luque is also famous for making beautiful guitars and Paraguayan harps. People here create amazing Filigranas, which are fancy gold and silver filigree jewelry pieces. One special piece is the seven-band ring called Carretón de Siete Ramales.

What's in a Name? The Story of Luque
The name Luque first appeared in records in 1635. This was when a Spanish governor gave land to a Captain named Miguel Antón de Luque. This land was near Asunción and was known as las Salinas. Captain Antón de Luque had been working there for over twenty years.
About a hundred years later, in 1743, another Miguel de Luque, who was related to the first one, gave some of this land away. He gave it to the Franciscans, who built a small church there. This church was for the Virgin of the Rosary and was finished around 1750-1755. After that, the area's old name, Salinas, changed to Valle de Luque.
In 1781, the governor Pedro Melo de Portugal divided Paraguay into different areas. He officially named one of these areas Partido de Luque.
