The first church, St. Luke's Anglican Church, was built in 1872. A few years later, in 1877, the very first school opened its doors. These buildings became central to the lives of the early settlers.
How Nulkaba Got Its Name
The area was first called "The Village of Pokolbin" when it was planned in 1884–85. For a while, people even called it Cessnock. But as the town of Cessnock grew bigger to the south, a new name was needed for this village. So, in 1927, the name Nulkaba was officially chosen.
