Hasan Nusret Fişek (born November 21, 1914, in Sivas, Turkey – died November 3, 1990, in Ankara, Turkey) was a famous Turkish doctor. He also served as a high-ranking official in the Ministry of Health.

Early Life and Education

Nusret Hasan Fişek was born in Sivas on November 21, 1914. His father, Hayrullah Fişek, was a commander during the Turkish War of Independence. Nusret had one brother named A. Hicri Fişek.

After finishing Kabataş High School in 1932, he went to Istanbul University to study medicine. He graduated with excellent grades in 1938. He then started to specialize in studying bacteria.

Later, in 1946, he became an expert in how living things work and food science (called Biochemistry). Nusret Fişek also earned a special doctor's degree from Harvard University in the United States in 1952.

In 1940, Nusret Fişek married Perihan Rukiye. They had two sons, Kurthan and A. Gürhan.

Professional Career and Achievements

In 1955, Fişek became a professor who taught about biochemistry. By 1966, he was a full professor of Public Health. He became known worldwide for his important work on the tetanus vaccine. He also helped set up and improve many labs for studying biochemistry.

In 1960, while still leading the Public Health School, he was chosen to be a top official at the Ministry of Health. He worked in this role until 1965. During this time, he even acted as the minister for a short period.

In 1963, Fişek took charge of a new group at Hacettepe University in Ankara. This group focused on community health. From 1983, he spent six years as the leader of the Union of Turkish Doctors. He was a member of many doctor groups both in Turkey and around the world. He also wrote many science papers, some in other languages.

Later Years and Passing

Nusret Hasan Fişek passed away in Ankara on November 3, 1990. He was buried at the Cebeci Asri Cemetery in Ankara.

Awards and Recognition

Nusret Fişek received several important awards for his work:

  • He got the 150th Anniversary Award from Michigan University. This was for his studies on how human populations change over time.
  • He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP). This honor was given for his efforts to make healthcare available to everyone.
  • He received the TUBİTAK Science and Service Award in 1993. This award from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey recognized his work on population studies and public health.
