History of Nymboida

Settlement in Nymboida began in 1840. Two early settlers, Gregory Blaxland Jnr and William Forster, started sheep farms here. Gregory Blaxland Jnr was the son of the famous explorer Gregory Blaxland.

Blaxland first named his land "Pandemonium" because of the difficulties he faced. Later, he changed the name to Nymboida when he tried to sell it. The village of Nymboida got its name from this property.

Nymboida as a Service Stop

Nymboida became an important stop for travellers. It was a resting place for Cobb and Co stagecoaches and bullock teams. Timber cutters, farmers, and other pioneers also stopped here. They were travelling on the wool road that connected Armidale to Grafton.

Today, Nymboida has an inn, a general store, and a police station. There is also a public primary school. In 2018, about 20 students were enrolled there. The main ways people earn money in the area are through farming and tourism.

Nymboida Coal Mine

The Nymboida Colliery was a coal mine that operated from 1909 to 1979. For its last four years, the mine was run by the Miners Federation. From 1952 to 1979, the coal from this mine was used to power a station in Koolkhan.
