Nymphargus armatus is a tiny frog that belongs to the Centrolenidae family. These special frogs are only found in Colombia. They live specifically near a town called El Cairo in the Valle del Cauca Department. For a long time, this frog was known by a different name, Cochranella armata. But scientists changed its genus in 2007.

What is the Nymphargus Armatus?

Nymphargus armatus is a type of glass frog. These frogs are known for their see-through skin. This means you can sometimes see their insides!

How Big Are These Frogs?

These frogs are quite small. Male Nymphargus armatus frogs are about 23 to 25 millimeters long. That's less than an inch! Female frogs are also small, measuring about 24 to 25 millimeters. Scientists measure them from their nose to their rear end.

What Makes Them Special?

Male Nymphargus armatus frogs have something unique. They have rough, spiky patches on their thumbs. These are called "nuptial spines." The name armatus means "armed" in Latin, which refers to these special thumb spikes.

Male frogs also have a special call. They make a soft, whistling sound. They usually call from the tops of leaves and plants. Female frogs lay their eggs on the tops of leaves too.

Where Do These Frogs Live?

Nymphargus armatus frogs live in Colombia. They are found in the Western Mountain Range. They prefer areas with untouched, old-growth forests. You can find them next to open streams in these forests.

Why Are They Critically Endangered?

This frog is in big trouble. It is listed as "Critically Endangered" by scientists. This means it is at a very high risk of disappearing forever. The main reason is that it is only found in one small area. If something bad happens to that one place, the entire species could be wiped out.
