The mall was located where Eastchester Drive and East Hartley Drive meet.

The Story of Oak Hollow Mall

Opening Day: A New Shopping Spot

Oak Hollow Mall first opened its doors on August 9, 1995. It was a huge place, almost 1.3 million square feet! To give you an idea, that's like 22 football fields. This made it one of the biggest malls in the area. It was the second-largest in Guilford County. It was also the third-largest in the Piedmont Triad region. When Oak Hollow Mall opened, it became very popular. It even caused an older mall nearby, called Westchester Mall, to close down.

Why Stores Started Leaving

In the 2000s, Oak Hollow Mall started to face some challenges. Many stores inside the mall began to close. Even its biggest stores, called "anchor stores," started to leave. People began to shop more at other malls in nearby cities like Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Also, a tough economic time made it harder for stores to stay open.

One of the big anchor stores, Dillard's, closed one of its two levels. The part that stayed open became a special outlet store. Another major store, JCPenney, closed on June 1, 2011. It couldn't make enough money to stay open. A store called Steve & Barry's also went out of business. This space later became a Sears call center, which is like a customer service office.

New Owners and Final Closure

On February 24, 2011, a company called CBL & Associates sold Oak Hollow Mall. High Point University bought the mall for $9 million. At first, the university said the mall would stay open for shopping.

However, more big changes were coming. On December 27, 2011, Sears Holdings Corporation announced that its Sears store at Oak Hollow Mall would close. The store had big sales to clear out its items. It finally closed its doors in April 2012.

Another important store, Belk, left the mall in 2014. It moved to a newer shopping center about 5 miles away.

In January 2017, High Point University announced the mall would close for good. By then, only 11 stores were left. The mall officially closed on March 10, 2017. The company that managed the mall said it was too hard to keep it open. This was especially true after the Sears call center closed in February 2017.

After the mall closed, some parts stayed open. A community center continued to use the old JCPenney space. The Dillard's Clearance Center also stayed open. This was because Dillard's still owned its building. Other stores outside the main mall, like Target and Barnes & Noble, also kept operating.
