Downtown Oakland in Oakland, Nebraska

Oakland got its name from an early settler named John Oak. The town officially became a village on April 13, 1881. Back then, it already had many businesses, including two banks and a printing office.

The main jobs in the Oakland area were farming and raising animals like cattle and hogs. People also worked in sales, selling goods to others. In 1900, a railroad line, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, was built to Oakland. This helped the town grow by making it easier to transport goods.

Oakland was once home to a big basketball event called the Swedish Basketball Classic. This event took place from 1993 to 2006. It later moved to Midland University in Fremont and changed its name. Since 1913, Oakland has also hosted the Burt County Fair, a fun event for the community.
