Oaklands is a small town in the Riverina area of southern New South Wales, Australia. It is about 615 kilometers southwest of Sydney, the state capital. You can also find it 105 kilometers northwest of Albury.

Oaklands is part of the Federation Council local government area. In 2021, about 304 people lived there. Even though it's a small town, Oaklands has a few cool places. There is a pub, a bowls club, and a swimming pool. Kids can go to school right here, from Kindergarten all the way to Year 12. There is also a day-care.

A Look Back: Oaklands' History

The first people to settle in the Oaklands area were two brothers, James and William Tyson. They arrived in 1846. The Oaklands Post Office opened its doors much later, on June 16, 1890.

The main way people make a living in Oaklands is through farming. They grow crops like wheat and rice. Oaklands is also a big place for handling and storing grain.

Special Local Orchid

Oaklands is home to a very special native orchid called the Oaklands Diuris. This beautiful flower is currently only found in the Oaklands region. It is a threatened species, which means it needs protection.

Trains and Railways

Oaklands has an interesting history with trains. A railway line from The Rock was extended to Oaklands in 1912. This line used a standard gauge, which is a common width for train tracks.

Later, in 1938, another railway line reached Oaklands from Yarrawonga. This line came from Victoria and used a broader gauge. This meant that Oaklands became a "break-of-gauge" point. Trains from New South Wales and Victoria could not use the same tracks here.

In 2008, the railway line to Albury was changed to standard gauge. For a while, the Oaklands line was like a "gauge orphan." This meant it was a different gauge from the main lines it connected to. After a lot of effort, the 113-kilometer (70-mile) branch line was also changed to standard gauge.

Oaklands is about 313 kilometers (194 miles) from Melbourne. It is also about 675 kilometers (419 miles) from Sydney.
