The Rock railway station is a special old train station in The Rock, Australia. It's listed as a heritage site, which means it's an important historical building. Today, it also has an antique shop! The station is located on the main train line that goes south, called the Main South line. It's also known as The Rock Station and yard group. This important place was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.

Station History

The Rock railway station first opened its doors on September 1, 1880. Back then, it was called Hanging Rock. This happened when the Main South line was made longer, connecting Wagga Wagga to Gerogery.

Name Changes Over Time

The station's name changed a couple of times.

  • On December 28, 1882, it was renamed Kingston.
  • Finally, on February 10, 1883, it became known as The Rock, which is its name today.

Becoming a Junction Station

On July 8, 1901, The Rock station became even more important. It turned into a "junction station." This means it was a place where two train lines met. The Oaklands line opened, connecting to Lockhart. At this time, the station also got a place to store and fix train engines and carriages.

Railmotor Depot Era

From the late 1950s, The Rock station became a "railmotor depot." This was a base for smaller trains called railmotors. These railmotors were used for many services south of Junee. They traveled to places like Albury and along other lines such as the Oaklands, Rand, Holbrook, and Kywong lines. These services stopped in 1974, and the depot was taken down in 1978.

Train Services

The Rock station is served by NSW TrainLink trains. These are called XPT services. There are two trains each day in both directions. They travel between Sydney and Melbourne.

Request Stop Information

The Rock is a "request stop." This means the train only stops if passengers have booked a ticket to get on or off the train there. If no one has booked, the train will just go past!

Station Description

The station complex includes several interesting parts.

  • There is a wooden station building, built in 1880. It's a typical design for railway stations from that time.
  • There's also a brick house for the station master, also built in 1880. The station master was the person in charge of the station.
  • The platform itself is made of brick and was finished in 1880.
  • You can also see a crane and platform, and old platform signs.

Heritage Importance

The Rock railway station is a very important historical site. It's part of a special area in the town that is protected to keep its old look. The railway line helps to define the edge of this area. The station building is one of the few original buildings left from when the town was growing and doing well.
