Algoma is a town located in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2010, about 6,822 people lived there. Algoma is home to several smaller communities. These include Highland Shore, Leonards Point, Melrose Park, and Oakwood.

History of Algoma

The town of Algoma has an interesting past. It was first settled in 1851. Back then, it was known as "Wolf River." This name was a loose translation of a local native term.

Later, in 1871, the town got its current name, "Algoma." This name also comes from a native term, meaning "park of flowers." Over many years, Algoma has changed its main focus. It used to be a place known for commercial fishing. Now, it is more focused on tourism. People visit to enjoy the area's natural beauty.

Algoma's Location and Landscape

Algoma is a town with a mix of land and water. It covers a total area of about 28.9 square kilometers (11.2 square miles). Most of this area, about 22.7 square kilometers (8.8 square miles), is land. The rest, about 6.2 square kilometers (2.4 square miles), is water. This means that over 21% of the town's area is water.

The town is right on the shore of Lake Butte des Morts. This lake is connected to Lake Winnebago. Lake Butte des Morts is formed by two rivers flowing into it: the Wolf River and the Fox River. Algoma is located to the west of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. You can find it where state highways 41 and 21 meet.

According to the census from 2000, there were 5,702 people living in Algoma. These people lived in 1,940 households. A household is a group of people living together in one home. Most of these households, 1,672, were families.
