Where is Oakwood Hills Located?
Oakwood Hills is in the southeastern part of McHenry County. You can find it at these coordinates: 42°14′52″N 88°14′43″W / 42.24778°N 88.24528°W. It is near other towns like Prairie Grove, Crystal Lake, and Cary. The Fox River is about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east. Downtown Chicago is about 46 miles (74 km) to the southeast.
The village covers a total area of about 1.17 square miles (3.04 km²). Most of this area, about 1.09 square miles (2.82 km²), is land. The rest, about 0.08 square miles (0.22 km²), is water. Silver Lake is in the western part of the village. Water from Silver Lake flows east into the Fox River. The nearby area of Silver Lake is just south of Oakwood Hills.

Community Concerns About a Power Plant
In the summer of 2014, people living in Oakwood Hills and nearby areas were worried. There was a plan to build a power plant just north of the village. This plant was proposed by companies called Northland Power and Enventure Partners.
A group of concerned citizens hired an expert, Robert G. Abboud. He wrote a report about the possible effects of the power plant. The report pointed out several risks. These included concerns about groundwater, air quality, and noise. The report suggested that the project needed more study before moving forward.
