About Obie Trice

Early Life and Start in Music

Obie Trice III was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. His mother, Eleanor Trice, raised him and his three brothers. When he was 11, his mother gave him a karaoke machine. He used it to practice rapping over music from artists like N.W.A.

By age 14, Obie Trice was attending rap battles in Detroit. These battles were held at a place called the Hip Hop Shop. Proof from the group D12 hosted these events. The positive reactions he received encouraged Trice to take rap music seriously.

Trice first called himself "Obie 1". However, before Proof introduced him at the Hip Hop Shop, he asked for his real name. Proof then introduced him as "Obie Trice," which became his stage name. Later, Obie Trice met Eminem through D12 member Bizarre.

Joining Shady Records
