History of Ocean View
The Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE) area started in the late 1950s. It was first developed by the Crawford Oil Company. This large area had over 10,000 lots of land. The land here is very interesting. It goes from rough lava fields to areas with many {{ohiʻa}} trees. The elevation changes a lot, from about 1,500 feet to 5,000 feet above sea level.
Later, other neighborhoods were built closer to the coast. In the early 1980s, the community started to grow. A service station and a hardware store were built. This made it easier for people living there to get supplies.
Community Growth and Services
In 1989, the Ocean View Town Center was created. This was a big step for the community. Around the same time, the Ocean View Road Maintenance Corporation began fixing the roads. This helped people travel more easily. Soon after, a new market opened. It had a laundromat and a restaurant. Today, Ocean View has two shopping centers.
In 2004, a large piece of land nearby was bought. This land, once called Kahuku Ranch, became part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Ocean View also has its own post office. The ZIP code for the area is 96737. Most mail is picked up at the post office, as street delivery is limited.
Geography of Ocean View
Ocean View is located on the southern part of the Big Island of Hawaii. It sits on the southwest side of the Mauna Loa volcano. This volcano is a shield volcano, which means it has gentle slopes. The elevation in Ocean View varies greatly. It ranges from about 600 feet near the southern coast to 4,900 feet further north.
Roads and Travel
Hawaii Route 11 is the main road that goes through Ocean View. This highway connects the community to other major towns. If you drive northeast, it's about 76 miles to Hilo. If you go northwest, it's about 46 miles to Kailua-Kona.
The total area of Ocean View is about 36.30 square miles (94.02 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The region is known for having earthquakes. This is because it's located on an active volcanic island.
