Ocimum americanum, also known as American basil, lime basil, or hoary basil, is a type of plant. It's an annual herb, which means it lives for only one growing season. This plant belongs to the Lamiaceae family, which includes many well-known herbs like mint. Even though it's called "American basil," it actually comes from Africa, parts of Asia (like India and China), and Southeast Asia. You can also find it growing naturally in places like Queensland in Australia, Christmas Island, and some parts of tropical America.

What Does American Basil Look Like?

American basil is a herb that grows up to 40 centimeters (about 16 inches) tall. Its stems and leaves are a bit hairy. The leaves grow opposite each other and have small "teeth" along their edges. This plant also produces small flowers that can be white or purple, growing in clusters. It has a long taproot that goes deep into the soil.

What Does American Basil Smell Like?

The whole American basil plant smells very strong and pleasant. Many people say it has a scent similar to citrus fruits like lemon or lime. This is why it's often called "lime basil"!

How Is American Basil Used?

Because of its lovely citrus-like smell, American basil is used in cooking. You can use it in many of the same ways you would use sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum). It's also used to make essential oils, which are concentrated plant extracts. Some people even find it hard to tell the difference between American basil and sweet basil. Besides its culinary uses, this plant is also known to have some medicinal properties.
