A Look Back: Ogden Canyon's History

Ogden Canyon gets its name from the Ogden River. The river was named after Peter Skene Ogden. He was a Canadian fur trader and explorer in the 1800s.

Building the First Road and Toll Gate

The very first road through Ogden Canyon was built by Lorin Farr and Isaac Goodale. This road was important for travel and trade. In 1860, a toll gate was set up on the road. A toll gate is like a checkpoint where people pay a small fee to use the road. From 1865 to 1882, the Ogden Canyon Road Company managed this toll gate. After 1882, the road became a public road, meaning anyone could use it without paying a fee.

The Historic Lime Kiln

In 1865, a lime kiln was built in Ogden Canyon. A lime kiln is a special oven used to heat limestone. This process creates lime mortar. Lime mortar was a very important material. Pioneers used it to build homes and other structures. The kiln was restored in 2008, so you can still see it today.
