Story of the Adventure
It's the first Christmas season in Arendelle since the castle gates opened again. Anna and Elsa throw a big party for everyone in the town. But the townspeople all leave early to get ready for their own family holiday traditions. This makes Anna and Elsa realize they don't have any family traditions of their own.
Elsa feels a bit sad, thinking it's because she was isolated when she was younger. When Olaf and Sven hear this, they decide to help. They go on a mission to find different holiday traditions. Their goal is to see if any of these traditions could work for Anna and Elsa's family.
As Olaf travels through the town, he learns about many different holiday customs. These include traditions for Christmas, Hanukkah, and the Winter solstice. After visiting Oaken's shop, Olaf, Sven, and their sleigh are full of ideas. They travel through the snowy land, but a piece of coal from a portable sauna sets their sleigh on fire! They slide down a hill, and Olaf and Sven get separated by a deep crack in the ice.
Olaf is left with only a fruit cake. He tries to make his way through the woods and is even chased by wolves! Meanwhile, Anna and Elsa find some old items in their attic. Sven returns to Kristoff and tries to tell him, Anna, and Elsa about Olaf's trouble. They all gather the people of Arendelle to go look for Olaf.
Olaf finally escapes the wolves but loses his fruit cake to a hawk. He feels very sad and gives up near a tree close to the kingdom. Anna and Elsa find Olaf and cheer him up. They tell him that they actually do have a special tradition: Olaf himself! When Elsa and Anna were separated, Anna used to slide cards and dolls of Olaf under Elsa's door every year. As everyone celebrates the holidays, the hawk drops the fruit cake right on Olaf. He happily declares it "A Christmas miracle!"

How the Film Was Made
The idea for this short film was first announced in 2016. It was planned to be a TV special for ABC. Roy Conli produced it, and Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers directed it. The title was shared during a special called The Making of Frozen: Return to Arendelle. It was also announced that the film would have new songs by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson.
However, in June 2017, plans changed. The filmmakers decided the short film was too grand for TV. So, it was released in movie theaters instead! It played before Disney/Pixar's movie Coco. The main voice actors from Frozen (2013) all returned for this adventure.
The music for the film was recorded in May 2017 by a large 80-piece orchestra. This short film was the first musical project for the directors. They wanted to keep the story simple and clear. They also mentioned that the jokes about fruitcake in the film are a running gag from their earlier project, Prep & Landing.

When the Film Was Released
Usually, Pixar movies start with a short film before the main feature. Olaf's Frozen Adventure was chosen to play before Coco starting on November 22, 2017. This was a bit of an "experiment" because, at 21 minutes, it was longer than most short films shown before Pixar movies.
In Mexico, some people found the short film to be too long. Because of this, many Mexican cinemas later removed the short film from showing before Coco. Some theaters even put up signs to warn people about the short film's length. Olaf's Frozen Adventure stopped playing in U.S. theaters on December 8.
In the UK, Olaf's Frozen Adventure was shown before re-releases of Frozen on certain dates in November and December 2017.
On November 23, Disney announced that the film would also be available on Disney's cable TV channels in Latin America and on Netflix starting December 8. It also aired on Mexican TV channels. The short film made its debut on ABC in the United States on December 14, 2017. It was part of the "25 Days of Christmas" event and was watched by about 5.64 million people.
