The Old Lyme Historic District is a special area in Old Lyme, Connecticut. It's like stepping back in time! This historic village is mostly found on Lyme Street, just south of Interstate 95. People started settling here in the mid-1600s. The buildings show off architecture from the early 1700s onwards. This place was once a busy center for building ships and home to many ship captains. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Discovering Old Lyme's History

Old Lyme was one of the first places settled by the Puritans in the 1600s. It was part of the early Saybrook Colony. This area was the original town center for Lyme. In 1855, it became its own community called South Lyme. Later, it changed its name to Old Lyme.

A Look Back in Time

Since the very beginning, the village center has been along Lyme Street. This street runs next to the Lieutenant River. The river flows into the Connecticut River. In the 1700s and 1800s, Old Lyme was a busy place for building ships. Many ship captains lived here.

The Famous Art Colony

In the late 1800s, Old Lyme became home to the Old Lyme Art Colony. This was a group of artists who loved to paint the local scenery. Today, the village still celebrates art. You can find the Lyme Art Association and the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts here.

What You'll See Today

The historic district stretches along Lyme Street. It goes from the I-95 junction south to McCurdy Street. It also includes a few buildings north of I-95. These include the Old Lyme Inn and the Florence Griswold House and Museum. This museum was once the heart of the art colony.

The town's main buildings are also in the village. This includes the town hall and the library. The houses in the district show many different styles. They range from the early 1700s to the late 1800s. One famous building is the Peck Tavern on Sill Lane. It was an 18th-century tavern and is now a private home.
