What is the Peck Tavern?
The Peck Tavern is located in the northern part of Old Lyme's historic village. It sits where Sill Lane and Boston Post Road meet. This building is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a sloped roof. The outside is covered with wooden siding. A large section extends from the back of the building.
The front of the building faces south. It has five sections for windows. The middle section sticks out and has a gabled roof. The main door is in this middle part. It has fancy columns next to it. There is also a small window above the door.
A Look Inside the Tavern
Inside the Peck Tavern, there are some special features. One unique part is the old taproom. This was the area where drinks were served when it was a tavern. You can still see the original sign from the 1700s there!
How Old is This Building?
No one knows the exact date the Peck Tavern was built. People believe it was built in the first half of the 1700s. It might even include parts of a building from around 1680. The main part of the building probably got its current look around 1769. This was when John Peck bought the property.
Famous Visitors and History
John McCurdy, a very rich person from Lyme, had a shop in the tavern. This tavern was also a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty. This was a group of people who wanted America to be free from British rule. They met here in the years before the American Revolution.
George Washington visited the tavern in April 1776. He was traveling from Boston to New York. People say he was "dancing the night away" in the ballroom on the second floor. The building was used as a tavern until the early 1800s. It was a major stop on the old post road. This road later became a busy turnpike.
The Peck family owned the house until 1904. After that, one family owned it until 1978. For a while, it was the main office for the Old Lyme Guild. This was a local group for crafts.
