About the Red-Washed Prominent Moth

What It Looks Like

This moth has a wingspan of about 30 to 45 millimeters. That's roughly the length of two small paperclips! Moths living in the western parts of North America tend to be lighter in color and more grey. They look a bit like another moth called Oligocentria perangulata, which lives further south.

Life Cycle and Diet

Adult moths usually fly from May to September. However, if you are in Alberta, Canada, you will mostly see them from June through early August.

The young moths, called larvae or caterpillars, eat leaves from many different trees and shrubs. Their favorite foods include apple, beech, birch, poplar, oak, maple, rose, and willow trees.
