One Liberty Plaza is a really tall building, called a skyscraper, in New York City, United States. It stands 743 feet (226 meters) high and has 54 floors. This impressive building was finished in 1973.
When it was first built, it was called the U.S. Steel Building. But later, its name was changed to One Liberty Plaza. It's located at 165 Broadway, right in the heart of New York City's Financial District.
Building History
Before One Liberty Plaza was built, another famous building stood on its spot. This was the Singer Building, which was built in 1908. For a short time, the Singer Building was actually the tallest building in the entire world!
However, to make space for One Liberty Plaza, the Singer Building was carefully taken down in 1968. This made way for the new, modern skyscraper we see today. The U.S. Steel Corporation was the company that developed this new building.
Design and Features
One Liberty Plaza was designed by a very famous architecture company called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. They started building it in 1969, and it was completed in 1972, opening its doors in 1973.
The building is designed in a style known as the International Style. This means it has a simple, modern look, often with lots of glass and steel. It cost about $120 million to build, which was a lot of money back then!
Inside, One Liberty Plaza has a huge amount of space. It covers over 2.3 million square feet, mostly used for offices. It also has 39 elevators to help people get to all 54 floors quickly. Today, the building is owned by two big companies: Brookfield Office Properties and Blackstone.
