One Penn Plaza (also known as 1 Penn Plaza) is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, in New York City. It stands between 33rd Street and 34th Street, just west of Seventh Avenue. This huge building is right next to famous places like Pennsylvania Station (a big train station) and Madison Square Garden (a huge arena). One Penn Plaza is the tallest building in the Pennsylvania Plaza area, which has many offices, hotels, and fun places.

History of One Penn Plaza

This amazing skyscraper was designed by a company called Kahn & Jacobs. It was finished in 1972. The building is 750 feet (230 m) tall and has 57 floors! It has special steps or "setbacks" on the 7th, 14th, and 55th floors.

Because of where it is on the west side of Manhattan, many offices in the building have clear views. You can see the Hudson River from the south, west, and north sides. The main entrance area, called the lobby, was updated in 1995. It started getting another update in 2019 to make it even better.

Who Owns One Penn Plaza?

Today, Vornado Realty Trust owns One Penn Plaza. Before that, it was owned by Helmsley-Spear Inc. They sold the building for $420 million in the late 1990s.

Making the Building Green

In 2009, there were plans to add a special power plant to the building. This plant would help heat the building more efficiently. By 2010, this new plant was working! It helped cut the building's carbon pollution almost in half. This makes One Penn Plaza a more environmentally friendly building.

Building Design and Features

One Penn Plaza is built with strong materials like structural steel and concrete. The outside walls are covered with grey solar glass and a type of metal called anodized aluminum.

Entrances and Elevators

This large building has 14 different entrances. Inside, there are 44 elevators, split into seven groups, to help people get to all 57 floors quickly.

Parking and Connections

There is a big underground parking garage with space for 695 cars. You can get to the garage from both 33rd and 34th Streets. There are also special underground walkways from the building. These paths connect directly to the Long Island Rail Road part of Pennsylvania Station, which is just one block away.

Shops and Public Spaces

The ground floor of One Penn Plaza has several shops and restaurants. For example, it used to have the top floor of a large, three-story Kmart store. This Kmart closed in April 2020.

Outside the building, on the west side, there is a public plaza with a unique fountain. This fountain doesn't use water in the usual way. Instead, it uses steam in the winter and fog in the summer. This prevents water from splashing out when it's windy.
