Story of the Film
The movie takes place during the time of the great Biblical Flood. Dave is a Nestrian, a colorful and somewhat clumsy creature. His special skills include building comfy nests and letting out a stinky blue gas when he's scared. Dave and his son, Finny, are always moving. Finny really wants to find a permanent home and make friends.
Finding the Ark
Dave hears a rumor about a giant wave that will cover the whole world. So, he takes Finny to a huge gathering of animals. Their only hope is a massive ark, built by a kind human named Noah. This ark is big enough for all the world's animals.
However, Dave and Finny are turned away. They are not on the list kept by the Lion, who is the ark's captain. But Nestrians are clever! Dave uses his crafting skills and some creative thinking. With the help of Hazel and her daughter Leah, who are Grymps, they manage to sneak onto the ark.
Left Behind
Just when they think they are safe, Dave and Hazel realize Finny and Leah are gone! The curious kids were playing on the scaffolding when the huge tidal wave hit. The ark sailed away, leaving Finny and Leah stranded on the last bit of dry land. Their parents panic as the ark leaves them behind.
Adventure on Land
A desperate race against time begins for the two young creatures. Leah is a natural hunter and survivor. She finds herself stuck with the clumsy Finny. But somehow, they manage to escape the rising water. They also avoid two scary griffins who look like giant bats and want to eat them.
Soon, they meet two more unusual creatures who also missed the ark. With his new friends, Finny starts to become the brave hero he truly is.
Parents' Mission
Meanwhile, Dave and Hazel must put aside their differences. They work together to fight their way past gorilla guards. They also have to deal with the proud Lion captain. Their goal is to take control of the ark and rescue their children.
The Fearless Four
After many adventures, the "fearless four" (Leah, Finny, Obesey, and his tiny friend Stayput) keep fighting off the griffins. The griffins see Leah and Finny as their next meal. Eventually, the griffins and Obesey, along with Stayput, fall into the rising water.
As the water reaches the top of the mountain where Leah and Finny are, their parents finally get control of the ark. They steer it towards the mountaintop. Leah and Finny manage to climb onto a piece of floating ice as the water covers the mountain.
A Surprising Discovery
When the ark passes their small iceberg, it's hard to climb aboard. Finny gets onto the ark first. But he doesn't want to leave Leah behind, so he jumps back onto the ice. Then Leah jumps onto the ark, using her sharp claws to hold on. Finny tries to get back on too, but falls into the water. He seems to be unconscious.
When Dave tries to save Finny, a big surprise is revealed: Nestrians are actually water creatures! They can breathe and swim perfectly underwater. This explains why Dave never felt at home on land. As the griffins try to attack Leah, Obesey eats them. It turns out Obesey is a whale, not a slug!
In the end, Dave and Finny swim happily alongside the ark. They wave to Leah and Hazel. On the ark's deck, the Lion Captain and his flamingo assistant talk. They wonder if they should have told Dave and Finny they were sea creatures from the start.
In the credits, the ark stops at Mount Ararat. All the animals leave the ark. Dave and Finny then discover other Nestrians living in the sea.
