The Open Season film series is a fun collection of animated movies from Sony Pictures Animation. It all started with the movie Open Season in 2006. Since then, there have been three more movies that went straight to video: Open Season 2 (2008), Open Season 3 (2010), and Open Season: Scared Silly (2015).
The series also includes a short film called Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run (2007) and a TV show, Open Season: Call of Nature, which started in 2023. Plus, there's a video game based on the first movie!

The Open Season Movies
The Open Season series follows the adventures of a big grizzly bear named Boog and his best friend, a one-antlered deer named Elliot. They live in the forest with many other animal friends and often find themselves in funny and exciting situations.
Open Season (2006)
In the quiet town of Timberline, Boog, a huge 900-pound grizzly bear, has a perfect life. He's a pampered pet who even stars in a nature show! But his world gets turned upside down when he meets Elliot, a goofy mule deer with only one antler.
After Elliot causes trouble at Boog's show, Boog's owner, Ranger Beth, has to tranquilize them both. Her friend, Sheriff Gordy, convinces her to release them into the Timberline National Forest. This happens just three days before hunting season begins! Boog and Elliot must quickly rally all the other forest animals. They work together to turn the tables on the hunters. In the end, Boog decides to stay in the forest with his new friends.
Open Season 2 (2008)
In this movie, Elliot is super excited for his wedding to Giselle. But then, their friend Mr. Weenie, a dachshund, gets taken back to his old home by his owners, Bob and Bobbie. Elliot sees this happen and tells Boog and the other animals.
They all decide to go on a rescue mission to save Mr. Weenie before he becomes a house pet again. It's a big adventure as they try to bring their friend back to the wild. In the end, Mr. Weenie chooses to stay with Bob and Bobbie and his other pet friends.
Open Season 3 (2010)
Boog wants to go on a "guys' trip" with his male friends. But everyone is busy with family! Feeling a bit down, Boog takes his teddy bear, Dinkleman, on the trip instead. He soon finds a poster for the Russian Maslova Family Circus.
At the circus, Boog meets a bear who looks just like him, named Doug. Doug is sneaky and tricks Boog into switching places with him. Boog also meets a skilled girl bear named Ursa and falls in love! Elliot and the other wild animals soon find out about the switch. They set out to rescue Boog before the circus goes back to Russia. Elliot leads the way once again. In the end, Ursa decides to live with Boog and his friends.
Open Season: Scared Silly (2015)
A few months after the second movie, Elliot tells a scary campfire story. It's about the Wailing Wampus Werewolf that supposedly lives in the Timberline National Forest. Boog is terrified by the story! He decides he won't go on their yearly camping trip until the werewolf is gone.
Elliot, Mr. Weenie, and the other animals want to help Boog overcome his fears. They team up to try and scare the fear out of him. They also try to solve the mystery of the Wailing Wampus Werewolf. Meanwhile, Shaw, a former hunter, returns to Timberline. He wants revenge on Boog and Elliot. Shaw sees a strange creature in the forest, which is actually Ian, Elliot's rival, in a disguise.
Shaw convinces Sheriff Gordy to reopen hunting season, but only for the werewolf. However, Shaw wants to hunt down Boog and Elliot too. He gets help from his old friends, Ed and Edna, who own a restaurant. Elliot catches the "werewolf" by himself after Boog gets angry and breaks up with him. Boog's girlfriend, Giselle, tries to tell him that Elliot was trying to help him.
Mr. Weenie starts to think he's the werewolf! At Dead Bear Gulch, Elliot and Mr. Weenie are caught by the "werewolf," who turns out to be Shaw in a costume. Luckily, Boog and his friends rush to the rescue! Shaw is defeated, and hunting season is permanently closed. The animals then discover that a real werewolf exists! But Elliot befriends him, and the werewolf joins their campout.
Future of the Series
In 2016, the director of Open Season: Scared Silly, David Feiss, hinted that there might be a fifth movie! He said that people really like the characters and the movies. So, it's possible we'll see more adventures with Boog and Elliot in the future.
Short Film
Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run (2007)
This short film is a bonus feature. You can find it on the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the first Open Season movie. It shows more fun adventures with Boog and Elliot.
Television Series
Open Season: Call of Nature (2023–present)
A new 2D animated TV series called Open Season: Call of Nature was announced in 2023. It started airing in Brazil and Latin America in October 2023. Then, it came to Canada in November 2023. This means more new stories with your favorite forest friends!
Video Games
- Open Season is a video game based on the first movie. It was released by Ubisoft in 2006 for many gaming systems like PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS. A version for the Wii was also released later that year.
- Elliot, the deer, also appears as a playable character in the Surf's Up video game.
