How to Play the Game
Creating Your Own Plays
In Opening Night, you get to be the director of your own theatre. You can choose from 40 actors, 100 different sets, and 300 props to build your scenes. Imagine all the stories you can tell! The game uses real actors from The Children's Theatre Company, dressed in cool period costumes.
Adding Special Effects
Once you have your scene, you can add lights, music, and sound effects to make it even better. To find what you need, you first pick a category, then choose the item. Just Double-click on an item to place it on your stage.
Writing and Speaking Lines
A special timer helps you make sure everything happens at the right time. You can also record your play to watch it later. The game has a cool feature that lets you type what your characters say, and then the game speaks it out loud! If a word sounds funny, you can type it the way it sounds to make it clearer. The words can also show up at the bottom of the screen, like subtitles in a movie.
How the Game Was Made
Bringing Actors to Life
The actors you see in the game were first filmed or photographed. Then, their images were turned into digital parts of the game. This was a bit like how characters were made for the game Mortal Kombat.
Behind the Scenes Expansion
In 1995, a bonus pack called Opening Night Behind the Scenes was released. It was also made by MECC with The Children's Theatre Company. This special disk showed how the game was created and how a real theatre works. You could watch interviews with theatre experts and look up theatre words in a glossary. It even had videos that took you on tours of different parts of a theatre.
Game Release and Sales
Opening Night was released in 1995, just in time for the holiday season. It was one of MECC's big games that year. The game was quite popular, becoming the 73rd best-selling title during the November–December 1995 holiday period.
