Genus:
Oraniopsis
Species:
appendiculata

The Oraniopsis is a special type of palm that grows only in Queensland, Australia. It is the only species in its group, which means it's quite unique! This palm, known as Oraniopsis appendiculata, loves to grow in the mountains, especially in rain forests.

This palm grows incredibly slowly. Its name, Oraniopsis, means "similar to Orania", which is another type of palm. The second part of its name, appendiculata, is a Latin word that means "having an appendage" or "attached".

What it Looks Like

The Oraniopsis appendiculata palm has gray trunks that are usually about 30 to 45 centimeters (about 1 to 1.5 feet) wide. They can grow up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) tall. However, some very old palms in their natural home can reach an amazing 18 meters (about 60 feet) tall!

It can take a very long time for these palms to even start growing a trunk. Sometimes, it takes 20 or 30 years! When they are young, they look like a big rosette of leaves on the ground. These leaves can be 3 to 4 meters (about 10 to 13 feet) long.

If the forest is very dense and there isn't much sunlight, these young palms might stay as ground rosettes for up to 60 years! In these shady spots, their leaves can stretch out to 8 meters (about 26 feet) long, trying to reach for the sun.

The leaves are a deep green color on top. Underneath, they have a slightly bluish-white look, which is called "glaucous." They are arranged neatly and have a single fold. Once the palm starts growing a trunk, its leaves form a crown that looks like a feather duster. These stiff leaves point upwards. Even after they die, the old leaves often stay on the trunk, forming a "skirt" around it.

How it Reproduces

The flowers of the Oraniopsis appendiculata grow from the center of the leaf crown. They are shorter than the leaves, usually up to 75 centimeters (about 2.5 feet) long. This palm has male and female flowers on separate plants, which means you need both a male and female palm for them to make seeds.

After the flowers are pollinated, the fruit grows. It ripens to a yellow or orange color and contains just one seed.

Getting the seeds to sprout is a very slow process. It can take a year or even more for a seed to germinate. Some seeds might even wait up to four years before they start to grow! Once they sprout, the young plant grows very slowly. It takes many decades before a trunk even starts to appear. Because they grow so slowly, the biggest palms in Queensland are probably several hundred years old!

Even though this palm looks a bit like the Orania palm, it is actually more closely related to a South American palm called Ceroxylon. They are very similar, but the Oraniopsis has a few small differences in its flower parts.

Where it Lives

The Oraniopsis appendiculata palm is found in the Australian rain forests. You can find it in the area around the Tully River, stretching south to the Big Tableland near Cooktown. It also grows inland as far as the Great Dividing Range, southwest of Atherton.

These palms usually grow at heights between 300 and 1500 meters (about 1,000 to 5,000 feet) above sea level. They can sometimes be found on rocky hillsides or sandy areas near the coast. However, they are most common in rain forests that are often cloudy and wet. They often grow in rich, dark soil or soil made from basalt rock. You won't find them in deep, open plains.
