The Orinoco Department was a large region, like a state, that was part of a big country called Gran Colombia. Gran Colombia existed for a short time in the early 1800s. This department was created in 1824.
Before it became the Orinoco Department, this land was part of another area called the Venezuela Department.
The Orinoco Department shared its borders with other important regions:
- To the west, it bordered the Apure Department.
- Also to the west, it bordered the Boyacá Department.

What Was the Orinoco Department?
The Orinoco Department was one of the major divisions within Gran Colombia. Think of it like a modern-day state or province. Its main city, or capital, was Cumaná. This department was named after the famous Orinoco River, which flows through a large part of South America.
Provinces of the Orinoco Department
The Orinoco Department was divided into several smaller areas called provinces. Each province had its own capital city. These provinces helped manage the different parts of the large department.
Cumaná Province
- The capital city of Cumaná Province was Cumaná.
- This province included several smaller areas called cantons, such as Cumaná, Carupano, Cumanacoa, Maturín, Cariaco, Aragua Cumanés, and Río Caribes.
Guayana Province
- The capital city of Guayana Province was Angostura, which is known today as Ciudad Bolívar.
- This province also had many cantons, including Angostura, Barceloneta, Alto Orinoco (with its capital Caicara), Caroni, Guayana Vieja, Caura (with its capital Moitaco), La Pastora, and Upata.
Barcelona Province
- The capital city of Barcelona Province was Barcelona.
- Its cantons included Barcelona, Aragua, Pilar, Piritu, San Diego, and Villa del Pao.
Margarita Province
- The capital city of Margarita Province was Asunción.
- This province was made up of two main cantons: Asunción and Norte (with its capital Santa Ana del Norte).
When Did the Orinoco Department End?
The Orinoco Department existed for only a few years. It was dissolved, or stopped existing, in 1830. This happened when Gran Colombia itself broke apart into separate countries like Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador.
