Orly Bauzon was born in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Philippines, on November 17, 1944. This was during the end of World War II, when Japan occupied the Philippines.
Orly Bauzon's Playing Career
Orly Bauzon had a long and successful career playing basketball. He played for his college team, for professional leagues, and even for the national team.
College Basketball Years
Orly Bauzon played college basketball for the University of Santo Tomas (UST). He was a key player for their men's basketball team, the UST Growling Tigers.
Playing in the MICAA League
After college, Bauzon played in the MICAA, which was a top basketball league in the Philippines. He played for several well-known teams:
- The Ysmael Steel Admirals
- The Meralco Reddy Kilowatts
- The Toyota Comets (also known as Komatsu Komets)
In 1973, Bauzon joined the Toyota team for their first MICAA tournament. He helped them reach the finals by making a game-winning shot in the semifinal. Toyota then won the championship against the Concepcion Motorolas.
Playing in the PBA League
When the Toyota team moved to the new PBA league, Orly Bauzon went with them. He continued to play for Toyota until 1978. He finished his playing career with the Mariwasa Honda Wildcats in the same year.
Representing the Philippines
Orly Bauzon was also a proud member of the Philippine national basketball team. He played in several big international events:
- The 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City
- The 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok
- The 1967 ABC Championship (now called the FIBA Asian Cup) in Seoul
At the 1967 ABC Championship, the Philippines won the gold medal. They beat the host country, South Korea, in the final game.
Orly Bauzon's Coaching Career
After he stopped playing basketball in 1978, Orly Bauzon became a coach. He coached several college teams:
- His old school, University of Santo Tomas, in 1988. His team finished seventh in the UAAP Season 51.
- Adamson University. He led them to the finals of the UAAP Season 55 in 1992, where they played against Far Eastern University.
- The University of the Philippines in 1995.
- The Pangasinan Presidents in the Metropolitan Basketball Association in 1998.
Later Life and Family
Orly Bauzon passed away on September 5, 2020, in Pampanga. He was 75 years old and died from a cardiac arrest.
Bauzon was married to Josie Bauzon. Josie was also a notable person, as she was the first woman to become a commissioner for the Philippine Sports Commission. She passed away in 2011.
