What is Orocovis Pueblo?
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, every town has a special area called a pueblo. This pueblo is the main part of the town. It usually has a central square, which is like a town park. You'll also find the town hall (where the local government works) and a Catholic church there.
Every year, the town holds Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) in this central square. These are big celebrations for the town's patron saint.

The Heart of the Town: The Central Plaza
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place in Orocovis. It was built on land given by Juan de Rivera y Santiago, who founded Orocovis. This square is used for both official events and fun activities. It's a place where people can meet up and hang out from morning until night.
Back in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided life in Puerto Rico. These laws said that the plaza should be big enough for "the parties" (celebrations and festivals). They also said that the streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
The Church in the Plaza
Right across from the central plaza in Orocovis barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia San Juan Bautista. This is a Roman Catholic church. It first opened its doors on October 29, 1838.
Fun Festivals
Orocovis celebrates its patron saint festival every June in the central plaza. This festival is called the Fiestas Patronales de San Juan Bautista. It's a mix of religious and cultural celebrations. You can usually see parades, play games, buy things from local artisans, enjoy amusement rides, try regional food, and watch live entertainment.
A Look Back: History of Orocovis Pueblo
The town's Catholic church was finished and opened in 1838. It was built on land that Juan de Rivera y Santiago, the town's founder, had donated.
Later, in 1898, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This happened after the Spanish–American War and the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 962 people lived in Orocovis Pueblo at that time.
More recently, in July 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided money. This money was for repairs to Orocovis' central plaza.
