A Look Back in Time: Orocovis's History
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S., which means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that the combined population of the Ala de la Piedra and Orocovis barrios was 1,403 people.
