The Orocrambus callirrhous is a type of moth. It belongs to the Crambidae family, which includes many grass moths. This moth was first described by a scientist named Edward Meyrick in 1883.
About the Moth
This special moth is found only in New Zealand. When a plant or animal lives only in one place, it is called endemic. This means you won't find the Orocrambus callirrhous moth anywhere else in the world!
Where It Lives
The Orocrambus callirrhous moth has been seen in different parts of New Zealand. It lives in the eastern and central areas of the South Island. You can also find it near the coast in Wellington and Whangarei on the North Island.
Size and Appearance
These moths are not very big. Their wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) is usually between 24 and 32 millimeters. That's about the length of two small paperclips! Adult moths are typically seen flying from December to April.
What It Eats
The young moths, called larvae, have a specific diet. They like to eat a type of grass called Festuca novaezealandiae. This grass is also native to New Zealand.
