Orvil Township was a township that existed in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It was around from 1886 until 1919.

What Was Orvil Township?

Orvil Township was a type of local government area, like a small town or district. It was created on January 1, 1886. This new township was formed from parts of two other townships: Washington Township and Hohokus Township. Today, Hohokus Township is known as Mahwah.

The township was located on both sides of the Saddle River. It stretched north all the way to the New York state border. To the south, it reached Ridgewood Township. Orvil Township was named after Orville James Victor. He was a journalist and writer who lived in that area.

The "Boroughitis" Effect

In 1894, something called "Boroughitis" happened in New Jersey. This was a time when many small parts of townships decided to become their own separate towns, called boroughs. Orvil Township was greatly affected by this.

New Boroughs Formed in 1894

Five new boroughs were created from Orvil Township in 1894:

  • Montvale and Woodcliff (now Woodcliff Lake) were both formed on August 31, 1894.
  • Allendale became a borough on November 10, 1894. This happened after people voted on it on November 8, 1894. Allendale was made from parts of Orvil, Franklin, and Hohokus Townships.
  • Saddle River was created after a vote on November 19, 1894. It officially became a borough on November 22, 1894.
  • Upper Saddle River was formed on November 22, 1894. This followed a public vote on November 20, 1894. It was made from areas taken from both Orvil and Hohokus Townships.

More Changes in the Early 1900s

More land was taken from Orvil Township in 1905. On March 8, 1905, a new borough was created called Orvil. This borough is now known as Ho-Ho-Kus.

The End of Orvil Township

Orvil Township officially ended on April 7, 1919. On that day, a group of citizens voted to create a new borough called Waldwick. This new borough was formed from the last remaining parts of Orvil Township.

With the creation of Waldwick, Orvil Township was dissolved. It had existed for 33 years.
