Oshima Province (渡島国, Oshima-no kuni) was a special area in Japan that existed a long time ago. It was located on the large northern island of Hokkaido. Oshima Province was created in 1869 and stopped being a province in 1882.

The old borders of Oshima Province are very similar to the areas we now call Oshima Subprefecture and Hiyama Subprefecture. These are two parts of Hokkaido today.

What Was Oshima Province?

Oshima Province was one of the many "provinces" that Japan used to have. These provinces were like different regions or states within the country. They helped organize Japan before it changed into the system it uses today.

Japan created these new provinces on Hokkaido in 1869. This was part of a big change for the country. Oshima Province was one of these new areas.

How Did Oshima Province Change?

During a time called the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan went through many big changes. The old provinces, including Oshima, were changed into new areas called "prefectures." Prefectures are how Japan is divided up today.

In the 1870s, maps of Japan were updated. Oshima Province was part of these changes. In 1882, Oshima and ten other provinces on Hokkaido were reorganized. They became three new prefectures: Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture. This was the end of Oshima Province as a separate area.
