Othella Harrington (born January 31, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a power forward and center. After high school, he played college basketball at Georgetown University. There, he played alongside future NBA star Allen Iverson. The Houston Rockets picked Harrington 30th overall in the 1996 NBA draft. This was the first pick of the second round.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Othella Harrington was a top high school basketball player. Experts ranked him as one of the best in the nation. He was often ranked with Jason Kidd, another famous player. Harrington played for Murrah High School, a strong basketball team.

Amazing High School Records

In his final year, Harrington averaged nearly 29 points per game. He also grabbed almost 25 rebounds and blocked nearly 6 shots per game. He set an amazing record of 2,303 total rebounds in his high school career. This is the second-best mark ever in high school basketball history. Only Bruce Williams has more rebounds.

Harrington also had 971 rebounds in his senior year alone. This is the second-highest single-season total. He was named "Mr. Basketball" in Mississippi two years in a row. Both Parade and USA Today named him a first-team All-American.

McDonald's All-American MVP

In 1992, Harrington was named the MVP of the McDonald's All American game. He scored 19 points in that game. He also set a game record with 21 rebounds.

College Career at Georgetown

Harrington received a scholarship to play at Georgetown University. He followed in the footsteps of other great "big men" like Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, and Alonzo Mourning. These players all played for coach John Thompson.

College Achievements

In his first year, he was named Big East Freshman of the Year. He was also chosen as a 2nd Team All-American before his second year. Harrington finished his college career as one of Georgetown's best players. He ranked fifth in all-time scoring. He was also fourth in total rebounds. He became the school's all-time leader in offensive rebounds.

Professional Basketball Career

Othella Harrington played three seasons with the Houston Rockets. He was then traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1999. This trade involved several players and draft picks.

Playing for the Grizzlies

During his first year in Vancouver, Harrington had his best season. He averaged 13.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He also started all 82 games of the 1999–2000 regular season. This showed he was a strong and reliable player.

Moving to Other NBA Teams

In 2001, Harrington was traded to the New York Knicks. Later, in 2004, he was part of another trade. This trade sent him to the Chicago Bulls. He then signed with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006.

Later Career

In 2009, Harrington played for the Los Angeles D-Fenders. This team is part of the NBA Development League. He then spent his final season playing overseas in Iran. He played for Petrochimi Bandar Imam BC.

Coaching Career

After his playing career, Harrington became a coach. In 2011, he returned to his old college. He was hired as an assistant coach at Georgetown University.
