Othman Ali Abbott (born September 19, 1842 – died June 24, 1935) was an important figure in Nebraska's history. He was the very first Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska, a state in the United States. He served in this role from 1877 to 1879, working alongside Governor Silas Garber. A Lieutenant Governor is like a vice-president for a state; they help the governor and take over if the governor can't do their job.

Early Life and Education
Othman Ali Abbott was born on September 19, 1842. His birthplace was Hatley, a town in Quebec, Canada. His parents were Abiel B. and Sarah (Young) Abbott.
When Othman was about eight years old, his family moved. They settled in DeKalb County, Illinois, in the United States. He attended high school in Belvidere.
Military Service and Law Career
In 1861, the Civil War began. Othman Abbott joined the army to serve his country. He served until 1865 and became a first lieutenant.
While in the army, he started studying law. After the war, he returned to Belvidere. He finished his law studies there and became a lawyer in 1867. Soon after, he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska.
Political Career
Othman Abbott quickly became active in Nebraska politics. In 1872, he was chosen to serve in the state senate. This was to finish a term that someone else had started.
In 1876, he made history. He was elected as the first-ever Lieutenant Governor for Nebraska. He served one term, which lasted for two years.
Family Life
Othman Abbott married Elizabeth M. Griffin on February 9, 1873. They had four children together. Their children were Othman A. Jr., Edith, Grace, and Arthur G.
Two of his daughters became very famous. Grace Abbott and Edith Abbott were well-known social workers. They worked to help people and improve society. Both Othman's wife, Elizabeth, and his daughters Edith and Grace, have been honored. They were inducted into the Women of Nebraska Hall of Fame.
Later Life
Othman Abbott continued to work as a lawyer. He also stayed involved in trade in Grand Island. He lived there until he passed away on June 24, 1935.
