Othman Ali Abbott (born September 19, 1842 – died June 24, 1935) was an important figure in Nebraska's history. He was the very first Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska, a state in the United States. He served in this role from 1877 to 1879, working alongside Governor Silas Garber. A Lieutenant Governor is like a vice-president for a state; they help the governor and take over if the governor can't do their job.

Early Life and Education

Othman Ali Abbott was born on September 19, 1842. His birthplace was Hatley, a town in Quebec, Canada. His parents were Abiel B. and Sarah (Young) Abbott.

When Othman was about eight years old, his family moved. They settled in DeKalb County, Illinois, in the United States. He attended high school in Belvidere.

Military Service and Law Career

In 1861, the Civil War began. Othman Abbott joined the army to serve his country. He served until 1865 and became a first lieutenant.

Political Career

Othman Abbott quickly became active in Nebraska politics. In 1872, he was chosen to serve in the state senate. This was to finish a term that someone else had started.

In 1876, he made history. He was elected as the first-ever Lieutenant Governor for Nebraska. He served one term, which lasted for two years.

Family Life

Othman Abbott married Elizabeth M. Griffin on February 9, 1873. They had four children together. Their children were Othman A. Jr., Edith, Grace, and Arthur G.
