Our Lady of the Angels and St Peter in Chains Church is a Roman Catholic church in Stoke-on-Trent, England. It is also known as Our Lady and St Peter's Chains Church. This beautiful church was built in 1857 and designed by an architect named Charles Hansom.

The church is located on Hartshill Road, in the middle of Stoke-on-Trent. It was originally built with a special home for Dominican nuns right next to it. Today, it is a very important historical building, listed as a Grade II building.

History of the Church

How the Church Started

The story of this church began in 1838. At that time, a Roman Catholic group from Longton started a small mission in Stoke. In 1841, they built a chapel called St Peter's Chains. By 1850, this chapel had its own priest.

A group of Dominican nuns moved to Longton in 1851. When their lease ended in 1854, they moved to the spot where the current church stands.

Building the Church

Building work for the new church and the nuns' convent began in 1856. To help pay for it, the old chapel was sold. The new church, named Our Lady of the Angels and St Peter in Chains, opened in 1857.

The convent also started a girls' school on the same site. Later, from 1864 to 1865, the building was made bigger. It then included a boarding school and a home called St Margaret's Home for Incurables. In 1866, the convent became known as a priory.

Adding More to the Church

From 1884 to 1885, a new chancel was added to the church. This part of the church was designed by an architect named A.E. Purdie.

Reverend Dr. James Northcote was the parish priest for this church for many years. He served from 1857 to 1860, and then again from 1881 until he passed away in 1907. In 1865, he gave the church a special gift: a series of Stations of the Cross from Belgium. In 1905, a new organ was put into the church. This was to celebrate Dr. Northcote's 50th year as a priest.
