Ovation Hollywood is a famous shopping and entertainment spot in Hollywood, California. It used to be called Hollywood & Highland. This big complex is located right where Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue meet.
It's home to some really famous places. You'll find the TCL Chinese Theatre and the Dolby Theatre here. The Dolby Theatre is where the exciting Academy Awards (the Oscars!) are held every year. This area is also part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's one of the most popular places for tourists to visit in Los Angeles.
Ovation Hollywood offers amazing views of the Hollywood Hills and the famous Hollywood Sign. The main part of the complex is a huge three-story courtyard. It was inspired by a scene from an old movie called Intolerance. The builders even created giant arches and pillars with elephant statues, just like in the movie! This helps visitors imagine how big the original movie set was.
You can find over 70 shops and 25 restaurants here. Some popular stores include American Eagle Outfitters, Forever 21, and Sephora. There's also a Lucky Strike Lanes bowling alley and a movie theater. The complex has large spaces for events, like the Grand Ballroom. This ballroom is used for the Governors Ball after the Oscars. Even famous chef Wolfgang Puck has offices here.
The complex also includes the 637-room Loews Hollywood Hotel. Getting here is easy because the Metro B Line subway station (Hollywood/Highland) is right underneath it.
History of the Location
This spot was once home to the famous 1902 Hollywood Hotel. Many movie stars stayed there in Hollywood's early days. The hotel was taken down in 1956. Later, other buildings like the First Federal Building and a shopping center were built here. These buildings stayed until 1998.
Building the Complex
The Ovation Hollywood complex opened in November 2001. It was built by a company called TrizecHahn. This big project was part of a plan to make Hollywood Boulevard a lively place again.
The project helped improve the area around the Hollywood/Highland Metro B Line station. It also added a huge underground parking lot with 3,000 spaces. The city of Los Angeles helped pay for part of the construction.
In 2004, a company called CIM Group bought the complex. They made some changes to attract more upscale stores. In 2005, the center got new escalators and signs. More stores were added too.
Over the years, some stores have closed, like GAP and Disney Store. But new ones have opened, such as Foot Locker, Pandora, and Apple Store.
In 2019, two companies, DJM Capital Partners, Inc. and Gaw Capital, bought the mall. They spent $325 million and planned big changes. They wanted to update the shops and add office spaces. They also removed the old Babylon-themed decorations. The renovations started in 2020. In 2022, the complex was officially renamed Ovation Hollywood.
Impact on Hollywood
Ovation Hollywood has helped bring new life to Hollywood Boulevard. Other businesses and hotels have opened nearby. For example, a W Hotel opened near the Hollywood/Vine Metro station.
The sidewalk in front of Ovation Hollywood is a very special place for new stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Because it's so popular, some stars are placed closer together. This allows more famous people to have their stars right in front of the center.
Before the Academy Awards ceremony, the actual Oscar statuettes are often displayed at Ovation Hollywood. Visitors can see the awards up close and even learn about the history of the Oscars. Sometimes, you can even get your picture taken holding a real Oscar! This has become a very popular event for fans.
