Journey to the Moon: The Story of Fei Fei
The movie begins with a young girl named Fei Fei. Her mother tells her the ancient legend of Chang'e, the Moon goddess. Chang'e took a special potion that made her immortal. This caused her to go to the Moon without her true love, Houyi. The legend says she still waits for him there.
Fei Fei and her family make mooncakes for the yearly Mid-Autumn Festival. Sadly, Fei Fei's mother becomes very sick. She gives Fei Fei a rabbit named Bungee before she passes away.
A New Family and a Daring Plan
Four years later, Fei Fei still believes in Chang'e. She is upset because her father is going to marry Ms. Zhong. Fei Fei also finds Ms. Zhong's son, Chin, annoying. During the Moon Festival, Fei Fei remembers her mother.
She sees a crane and thinks about the legend of Chang'e. Fei Fei decides to build a rocket to the Moon. She wants to prove that Chang'e is real. Her rocket looks like a Chinese paper lantern shaped like a rabbit. It uses fireworks to fly.
An Unexpected Trip to Lunaria
Fei Fei's rocket almost works perfectly. But then she realizes Chin has secretly come along for the ride! They start to crash back to Earth. Suddenly, a magical beam of energy pulls their rocket. It takes them all the way to the Moon.
They crash-land on the Moon. Playful spirits help them and take them to a place called Lunaria. There, they meet Chang'e and her dancers, the Lunettes. Chang'e tells Fei Fei she needs a special gift to bring Houyi back.
The Search for the Gift
Fei Fei takes a photo with Chang'e to show everyone she is real. But Chang'e takes the photo and demands the gift. Fei Fei doesn't know what gift Chang'e means. Chang'e gets frustrated and starts a competition to find her gift. She says it must be found before the "moondust" runs out.
Fei Fei gets mad at Chin and leaves him. She gets a ride with some "Biker Chicks" to her rocket's crash site. Meanwhile, Chin sees some Lunettes with the photo. Chang'e captures Chin and asks where the gift is. Chang'e challenges Chin to a game of ping pong. Chin wins, which makes Chang'e even more upset.
Chang'e cries because she thinks she will never see Houyi again. Chin is trapped in a room by Chang'e. Bungee, Fei Fei's rabbit, follows the Jade Rabbit into his workshop.
Discovering the Truth
Fei Fei and the Biker Chicks go to her rocket's crash site. There, Fei Fei meets Gobi, a Lunarian who was sent away. She finds her Chang'e doll and thinks it might be the gift. But the Biker Chicks grab the doll and leave Fei Fei and Gobi behind.
Fei Fei and Gobi ride giant toads to Lunaria. Gobi tells Fei Fei that Chang'e sent him away because he sang a song about moving on. Fei Fei and Gobi catch up to the Biker Chicks. During a struggle, the doll breaks.
But Fei Fei finds a broken piece of a jade circle inside one of her mooncakes. She realizes this is Chang'e's real gift!
Healing and Moving On
They return to Lunaria's palace and find Chin and Bungee. Fei Fei gives the broken jade piece to Chang'e. Chang'e puts it together to make a full jade circle. Chang'e and Houyi are briefly reunited. But Houyi tells Chang'e she needs to move on before he disappears.
Chang'e becomes very sad, and all the light in Lunaria goes out. Fei Fei tries to help Chang'e. When she enters Chang'e's sadness, Fei Fei also feels sad, remembering her own mother. They both realize they must move on from their losses. Chang'e and Fei Fei encourage each other to find love in their lives. This helps them both accept the deaths of their loved ones. Life and light return to Lunaria.
Chang'e thanks Fei Fei. She allows Fei Fei and Chin to go home. Bungee stays on the Moon with Jade Rabbit. Gobi is allowed to return to Lunaria. Fei Fei and Chin say goodbye to everyone. Back home, Fei Fei accepts her father's marriage to Mrs. Zhong. She also accepts Chin as her new brother. About a year later, Fei Fei is happy with her new family. She still looks up at the Moon, watching cranes fly towards it.
