History of Overland Corner
Overland Corner is located right on the Murray River, which is a very important river in Australia. It's part of an area called the Riverland in South Australia, close to towns like Barmera and Cobdogla.
Early Uses of the Land
Long ago, this area was a traditional camping spot for Aboriginal people. Later, it became a resting place for 'drovers'. Drovers were people who moved large groups of farm animals, like cattle, from New South Wales to Adelaide.
Gold Rush and River Trade
When the New South Wales gold rush started in 1851, Overland Corner became important. It supplied timber to fuel the paddle steamers that traveled up the Murray River. These steamers carried people hoping to find gold.
A small police station was built here in 1855 by Edward Bate Scott. It helped keep order in the busy area. This police station closed in 1894. A school also opened in Overland Corner and was still running in 1904.
The Historic Hotel
The famous Overland Corner Hotel was built in 1859. It was a popular stop for travelers and drovers. The hotel closed in 1897 but was reopened in 1965. Today, it is a key part of the National Trust of South Australia's Overland Corner Reserve. The hotel is also listed on the South Australian Heritage Register because of its historical importance.
Modern Day Locality
The official boundaries for Overland Corner were set on August 12, 1999. These boundaries included areas that were once known as the Overland Corner Shack Site and the Lock 3 Shack Site. On April 26, 2013, more land was added to the locality.
Government and Administration
Overland Corner is part of the federal division of Barker. For state government, it is in the electoral district of Chaffey. The local government areas that cover Overland Corner are the Berri Barmera Council and the Pastoral Unincorporated Area.
